They took lemonade up to Franklin later, calling everyone in. Whatever Franklin had been shouting for earlier had clearly been resolved and he looked bathed and bright after his exercises.

“Not quite the summer we were hoping for,” he said ruefully as they gathered around.

Eleanor noticed guiltily that Anna hung back, but she loved her father and would soon come around to him. She felt bad that her little girl was having to learn the harsher ways of the world but there wasn’t much she could do, bar try to guide her through it.

“At least we’re together,” Eleanor said. “And the sun is shining.”

“But not like it did,” Elliott said miserably. “I have to go back to school in three weeks.”

Eleanor looked at him, startled. He was right. She’d been so caught up in Franklin’s illness she hadn’t noticed the passing of time. Now, she noticed, some of the leaves on the trees were turning red.

“There’s much to look forward to,” Sara said.

Eleanor looked at her mother-in-law in surprise, grateful for this sudden positivity.

But then Sara added, “Hyde Park is lovely at this time of year.”

“Mama—” Franklin said.

But Sara was not listening. “I was thinking you could have the front drawing room made into a ground-floor bedroom and⁠—”

“Mama!”

Sara jumped.

“I am not going to live in Springwood.”

“But… but you have to, Franklin. Everyone loves you there. They’ll understand your, your…”

“Disability,” he filled in, his voice hard. “How considerate of them.”

Sara wrung her hands. “I mean simply that they will know it doesn’t change you. You will still be able to run the estate as your father did and⁠—”

“No.” Franklin’s voice was low but sure. “I am not going to become a gentleman farmer. It would bore me to tears.”

Sara patted his hand. “I’m sorry about that, son, but what else can you do now that you’re…?” She gestured to his withered limbs.

“Politics is about the mind, Mother, not the legs.”

“Politics is about public perception,” she shot back, then swung around to Eleanor. “Tell him, Eleanor. Tell him he must give up these foolish ideas of running for office and live a quiet life.”

Eleanor looked down at Franklin. The whole room seemed to hold its breath. No one ever stood up to Sara Roosevelt, but this was important. This was their future.

“No,” she said. “No, Mama, I’m afraid I will not tell him that. Franklin is made for the political life and would be wasted in the country. He will not be living with you in Hyde Park, but with me in Washington DC.”

Sara threw up her hands in horror, the children gaped. Eleanor stood up to her full six foot and Franklin held so tightly onto her hand she thought they might never be able to get their fingers unlaced. Lucy’s letters had almost torn their marriage apart but, one way or another, they were binding it together again. She would stand by him, as she had stood by him on their wedding day, and see him back on the path to his dream.
